Course Overview

Working with asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in Missouri requires state certification — and that certification starts with completing a Missouri-accredited AHERA training course. Regulated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Air Pollution Control Program under RSMo §643.225 and 10 CSR 10-6.250, the Missouri Licensed Asbestos Worker course is designed to provide workers with the knowledge, skills, and regulatory foundation required to safely and legally perform asbestos abatement activities in the state of Missouri.

Mid-America Safety & Environmental’s Missouri Licensed Asbestos Worker course is fully accredited under Missouri’s AHERA/EPA Model Accreditation Plan (MAP) requirements and prepares participants to meet both state certification requirements and applicable federal OSHA and EPA standards.

Missouri Certification Process

Completion of this course is the first step toward obtaining your Missouri DNR Asbestos Abatement Worker Certificate. After completing the course, participants must:

  1. Pass the course exam administered by the training provider
  2. Submit an application (Form MO 780-2667) to Missouri DNR along with:
    • Certificate of course completion
    • Passport-style color photograph
    • Initial certification fee ($50.00)
  3. Pass the Missouri Asbestos State Exam — a separate exam on Missouri asbestos statutes and rules, administered by DNR (minimum passing score: 70%; $25.00 exam fee)

Upon approval, the Missouri DNR issues an Asbestos Abatement Worker Certificate, valid for one year.

Maintaining Your Certification — Annual Refresher

Missouri asbestos worker certification must be renewed annually. To renew, certified workers must:

  • Complete a one-day (8-hour) Missouri-accredited AHERA Asbestos Worker Refresher course each year
  • Pass the refresher course exam
  • Submit a renewal application, refresher certificate, photo, and renewal fee ($30.00)

⚠️ Important: If your certification has lapsed for more than 12 months past expiration, you must retake the full initial worker course and retake the Missouri Asbestos State Exam.

Prerequisites & Requirements

  • No formal education or experience prerequisites are required for the worker discipline — this is the entry-level asbestos occupation in Missouri
  • Ability to read, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to participate in training and apply concepts on the job
  • Participants should be prepared for hands-on practical exercises; appropriate work clothing is recommended
  • Participants must be able to wear respiratory protection (a medical evaluation may be required by the employer prior to respirator use per 29 CFR 1910.134)
