The EPA Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Initial Certification Course is a comprehensive 8-hour program that prepares contractors, renovators, painters, property managers, and maintenance personnel to perform lead-safe work practices in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. This certification is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) per the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (40 CFR Part 745, Subpart E).
Course Overview
This hands-on course combines classroom instruction with practical activities to ensure compliance and worker competency in lead-safe practices. Key topics include:
- EPA RRP Rule Overview: Understanding federal requirements, roles, and responsibilities under the law.
- Lead Health Hazards: Recognizing dangers of lead exposure, especially for children and workers.
- Pre-Work Notifications: Proper notice to homeowners/occupants and required documentation.
- Lead Test Methods: Identifying lead-based paint using approved testing methods.
- Work Area Setup: Containment, signage, and protecting occupants and environments.
- Safe Work Practices: Techniques to minimize dust, prevent contamination, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Cleaning and Verification: Effective cleanup methods and post-project verification procedures.
- Recordkeeping and Compliance: Maintaining required EPA documentation and reports.
Training Format
The course includes interactive lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on skill assessments. Students must pass a final written test and a practical exam to receive EPA RRP Initial Certification.
