Course Overview
This half-day refresher course is designed for EPA-certified Renovators who need to renew their certification before it expires — or who are seeking to reinstate a lapsed certification. Conducted by an EPA-accredited training provider, this course satisfies the EPA’s mandatory refresher training requirement under the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule (40 CFR Part 745) and restores an additional five years of active Renovator certification upon completion.
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for:
- EPA-certified Renovators whose certification is expiring within the next 180 days
- Renovators whose certification has already lapsed and who need to reinstate active status
- State-certified Renovators in EPA-authorized states seeking renewal
- Professionals who completed initial RRP training and are maintaining continuous certification

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recall the core requirements of the EPA RRP Rule and identify any regulatory updates since their last certification
- Reaffirm proper pre-renovation notification and documentation procedures
- Demonstrate correct use of EPA-recognized lead test kits
- Review and apply required containment, work practice, and waste disposal standards
- Perform post-renovation cleaning verification procedures accurately
- Maintain complete and compliant recordkeeping documentation
Course Content
Module 1 – RRP Rule Review and Regulatory Updates A focused review of the RRP Rule’s scope, applicability, and any amendments or guidance updates issued since the previous certification period.
Module 2 – Pre-Renovation Requirements Refresher on owner/occupant notification, Renovate Right pamphlet distribution, and required pre-renovation documentation.
Module 3 – Lead Paint Testing Review of EPA-recognized test kit procedures, result interpretation, and documentation of testing outcomes.
Module 4 – Work Practice Standards Review of containment setup, prohibited practices, interior and exterior work practices, and proper waste handling and disposal.
Module 5 – Cleaning Verification Refresher on post-renovation visual inspection, cleaning verification using wet disposable cleaning cloths, and final site documentation.
Module 6 – Recordkeeping Requirements Review of required records, retention schedules, and documentation best practices to maintain regulatory compliance.
Module 7 – Hands-On Skills Assessment Practical exercises covering containment setup, test kit use, and cleaning verification — required by EPA for refresher certification.

Certification & Credentials
Upon passing the course assessment, participants will receive:
- A certificate of course completion from an EPA-accredited training provider
- Renewal of EPA Renovator certification for an additional 5 years
- Documentation suitable for submission in EPA-authorized states
Lapsed Certification: If your certification has already expired, you may still take the Refresher course to reinstate your credentials — you do not need to repeat the full Initial course. However, you may not perform the duties of a certified renovator until your renewed certification is in hand.
Prerequisites
Participants must have previously completed an EPA-accredited RRP Initial training course and hold (or have held) an EPA Renovator certification. Please bring your current or most recent certification documentation to class.
Regulatory Authority
This training program is accredited by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under 40 CFR Part 745, Subpart E, and meets all requirements for Renovator certification renewal under the Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule.
