Module 2 — Machine Types & Major Components

Get to know both machines and learn to call the parts by their right names. Covers the seven OSHA/ITA classes, the counterbalance truck's counterweight and front fulcrum, the three rough terrain configurations, the equipment a rough terrain machine must carry, and the major components on both: mast, carriage, overhead guard, backrest, and forks.

Module 3 — Stability, Load Charts & Center of Gravity

The most important module, because tip-overs are the number-one cause of forklift deaths. Module 4 — The Pre-Shift Inspection

A pre-shift inspection is the operator's responsibility, every shift, before the truck moves. Walk through the key-off visual walk-around, the key-on controls cycle, the battery checks for an electric truck, and the separate rough terrain checklists — plus inspecting the route itself and tagging out an unsafe truck.

Module 5 — Safe Operating Procedures

Most serious accidents trace back to a handful of operating decisions. Covers the five-step load-handling sequence, travel rules and carry height, giving pedestrians the right of way, standard hand signals, trailers and dock plates, rough terrain grades, securing an unattended truck, and lifting people only on an approved platform.

Module 6 — Visibility & Blind-Spot Management

Both machine types share four major blind zones — front behind the mast and load, rear over the counterweight, the right side, and the roofline. Covers why pedestrians don't hear the truck, when to travel with the load trailing, correct use of spotters, mirrors, cameras and horns, and engineered site controls.

Module 7 — Ramps, Grades & Narrow Aisles

On a slope the rules change, and one rule prevents grade tip-overs above all others: the load always stays on the high side, which flips your travel direction loaded versus empty. Covers traveling straight up and down a ramp, keeping the mast vertical, rear-end swing in narrow aisles, and blind intersections.

Module 8 — Hazardous Locations

Some areas hold flammable gases, combustible dusts, or ignitable fibers, and only a truck whose designation matches or exceeds the posted requirement may enter. More operators are hurt getting on and off than most people expect, and the seat belt is what turns a tip-over from fatal into survivable. Covers three-point contact facing the truck, why you never jump, wearing the belt whenever the truck moves, required PPE, adjusting the seat to stay inside the ROPS, and fitness to operate.

Module 11 — Key Numbers, Final Scenarios & Certification

A: A counterbalance forklift carries a heavy counterweight at the rear to offset the load at the front and runs on smooth, improved surfaces. A rough terrain forklift is built for unimproved ground — large pneumatic tires, high ground clearance, often four-wheel drive — and comes in vertical-mast, variable-reach (telehandler), and truck-mounted configurations. The telehandler in particular uses a load chart because its capacity changes with boom angle and extension.

A: The stability triangle is the three-point base of support formed by a forklift's two front drive wheels and the center point of the rear axle. A forklift stays upright as long as the combined center of gravity of the truck and its load stays inside that triangle. As the load rises, the triangle effectively becomes a pyramid and the margin shrinks — which is why raised loads and turning do not mix.

Q: What score do I need to pass the forklift exam?

A: You must score 70% or higher on the 25-question certification exam. Retakes are allowed, and the lesson modules stay open so you can review any topic before trying again.

Q: Do I need to renew my forklift certification?

A: Yes. OSHA requires operators to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Retraining is required sooner if an operator is observed operating unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, receives an evaluation showing unsafe operation, is assigned a different type of truck, or if workplace conditions change in a way that affects safe operation.
